Directions:

How can we meet the needs of today without diminishing the capacity of future generations to meet theirs? Sustainable development implies a broad view

of human welfare, a long term perspective about social development. Write an essay which should cover:

1) describing the set of drawings below,

2) stating its main idea, and

3) giving your comment.

The images above are both meaningful and instructive: this mans hard work is not only for his own benefit, but also for the benefit of future generations.

The pictures serve to remind us that the existence of our current happiness and valuable national heritage is due to the struggles of our predecessors.

We, in turn, should also work hard in order to guarantee the comfort and safety of generations to come. Sustainable development has become a topic of heated debate in recent years. While it is justifiable to satisfy current demands, we cannot neglect the needs of our descendants in the process. Our children also depend on Earths natural resources and we should not deprive them of such necessities.

Unfortunately, many people only think of their short term, personal interests. An entire forest might be clear cut, in the interest of making a profit, without a single tree planted in its place. This inconsiderate attitude towards the welfare of our descendants, as well the indifference to the outcome of such reckless actions, can only turn Earth into a cold and lifeless planet. People must be taught to appreciate Earth as not only their home, but also the home of our children and grandchildren, as well as all other plants and animals.

She was watching a Shanghai opera contest. The apartment was very quiet. Suddenly the light went out. It was a blackout, but I liked it very much. It came and I didn’t have to do my homework. We went to the living room very slowly. After 5 minutes, we all sat in the sofa. It was a lucky, fortunate day. I said that let’s held a concert. My parents agreed with me. I took out some candles and lighted up. We were singing, laughing and talking. We had a really good time. But while I was singing, the light suddenly turned on. Oh, my God. My father went back to his room went on writing. My mother turned on the TV and said to me “Dear, do your homework!” I felt very frustrated. I sat at the desk and thought I hated light. (趣祝福 WWw.ZF133.cOm)

the history of labor day

labor day differs in every essential from the other holidays of the year in any country, said samuel gompers, founder and longtime president of the american federation of labor. all other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man‘s prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. labor day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation.

labor day, the first monday in september, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of american workers. it constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.

founder of labor day

more than 100 years after the first labor day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

some records show that peter j. mcguire, general secretary of the brotherhood of carpenters and joiners and a co-founder of the american federation of labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.

but peter mcguire‘s place in labor day history has not gone unchallenged. many believe that matthew maguire, a machinist, not peter mcguire, founded the holiday. recent research seems to support the contention that matthew maguire, later the secretary of local 344 of the international association of machinists in paterson, n.j., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the central labor union in new york. what is clear is that the central labor union adopted a labor day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

the first labor day

the first labor day holiday was celebrated on tuesday, september 5, 1882, in new york city, in accordance with the plans of the central labor union. the central labor union held its second labor day holiday just a year later, on september 5, l883.

in l884 the first monday in september was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the central labor union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of new york and celebrate a workingmen‘s holiday on that date. the idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in l885 labor day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

A recent investigation shows that about 80 percent of pupils have private tutors.Such a popular practice indicates that people are attaching greater importance to education. Many parents, for various reasons, missed the chance of obtaining a good education. When their children meet with difficulties in study, they are helpless. Private tutoring is the only solution. As private tutoring is usually one-to-one, the teacher knows the strong points as well as the weak points of the pupil clearly.

However, private tutoring has its own disadvantages. For one thing, it takes up so much of the pupils’ time that they can hardly find enough time for rest and entertainment, which are essential for their physical and mental health. For another, some teachers, busy “shuttling” from one family to another, tend to neglect their regular teaching duties. What’s more, some teachers are eager to help pupils do well in the test, offering the so-called tips for test-taking rather than help them acquire what is more meaningful.

Generally speaking, its disadvantages outweigh its advantages. Greater emphasis should be laid on classroom teaching and practice, on the improvement of teaching quality and on the tapping of pupils’ potentials. Only in this way can a new generation be healthily brought up.

Change has been the one constant in my life. While staring out at the bleak Wisconsin winter, I think back to my beginnings on a warm tropical island. The biggest change was probably the first 鈥?moving from that buzzing Spanish-speaking isle to the sleepy sea-side town that was Tampa in 1978. It took me some time to realize that the other pre-schoolers could not understand my native tongue. Before long, I too was speaking their language.

Five years later I, an excited eight-year-old girl, boarded a school bus in New Jersey. The excitement quickly turned to fear as I heard rampant swearing in the back of the bus. I was truly shocked when the bus driver did nothing to stop the vulgarity. In my schools in Florida such behavior would have met with a bar of soap and a visit to the principal鈥檚 office. A year later, I had a "Jersey" accent, and had started swearing too.

After nine years my family then moved to a place called "a whole 鈥檔other country": Texas. I discovered that everything is bigger in Texas, from the size of a glass of ice tea to the distances on the road. My mother added barbecued brisket to the regular menu of turkey and Idaho potatoes on Monday and arroz con pollo on Tuesday.

The incredibly friendly Texans, wearing cowboy boots and going to high school football games on Friday nights, seemed a totally different breed from my friends in New Jersey. A slight drawl entered my speech.

In two years time, I found myself in the mountains of rural Bolivian. As part of a team of doctors and students researching hypertension on a group of African- Bolivian villagers, I quickly learned a new vocabulary that included medical and anthropological terms. The greatest test of my linguistic abilities came when a villager accused me of drinking blood samples in some kind of vampire-like witchcraft ritual. I had to bridge a vast cultural gulf to explain a DNA isolation and analysis protocol in Spanish to someone who had never heard of a gene m

As society and economy develop, dishonesty is no longer a stranger to us. Manufacturers and businessmen may promise more than their products can guarantee so as to make more profit. Doctors and nurses may lie to their patients for their patients’ benefit. Students may cheat on exams for better scores. As a matter of fact, dishonesty has become so widespread that wherever you are you find cases of dishonesty.

However, it is honesty that brings benefit both to yourself and to others. By being honest, manufacturers and businessmen build up mutual trust between themselves and customers, which in the long run generates more profit. By telling patients the truth about their conditions so that they can make their own decisions, doctors and nurses enhance their own credibility and honor their profession. By giving honest answers to questions, not only can students themselves learn about their own strengths and weaknesses, but they help their teachers evaluate the quality of their instruction as well.

Therefore, it pays to be honest and everybody must learn to be honest.
