Dear _,

The world is forever growing and evolving, as is the demand for new buildings and good infrastructure. The pressures of population growth and global warming are ever increasing, and civil engineers can help play a major role in designing more efficient structures, as well as planning projects in developing countries. I am attracted to me to civil engineering because I like the idea of helping to shape the world around me to meet the demands of the future. I hope for a challenging career which I will find personally rewarding and be able to feel that I have given something back to the community.

Academically, science has always been my main interest and is the area in which I am most able. I enjoyed biology, in particular learning about human impact on the environment. However, during my A levels I realised that my interests lay deeper in maths and physics. I enjoyed the problem solving involved within my subjects and the way a real life situation could be expressed and manipulated mathematically. What I found particularly interesting was relating what had been learnt in the classroom to real life situations, which is what gave me more interest in civil engineering - the appeal of a challenging career where I would have the opportunity to theoretically solve problems and practically apply solutions to have a beneficial effect on the world around me.

During my gap year I have had several work experience placements in various skilled trades such as building and joinery. Through joinery I gained an appreciation of the need for accurate design and construction, as well as a knowledge of the uses of wood as a building material. Though much of the building work I have undertaken was in construction, I found it to be invaluable experience. For example, whilst helping to build a garage I learnt about the importance of good design and planning by having to interpret the designs in order to determine how many bricks would be needed. During its constuction I noticed how important it was to build accurately, particually at the corners of the building which supported most of the weight of the roof. I also discovered the importance of keeping costs low, but the quality of work high. We made a different type of cement which was cheaper and weaker, but still met the needs for the inner walls. The most rewarding part of this experience seeing the project through from a plan on paper to its completion, and the feeling of satisfaction once it was completely built.

I have a passionate interest in music and have been playing guitar for about 5 years. I have enjoyed my time as a member of a band, which has helped me to work creatively as part of a team. More recently, I have also achieved grade 2 in jazz piano. For years I have had a great enthusiasm for skateboarding and in November began undertaking voluntary work with a group helping to plan and design a skateboarding facility in Kings Heath park. We were involved in preparatory work such as gaining public support and undertaking research at existing facilities across the UK, as well as its design. From this experience I learnt the importance of working as part of a team and meeting deadlines. Also, I gained an understanding of just how much preparation and organisation is needed, even for a small development.

By studying civil engineering at university I hope to build on my knowledge of maths and physics and learn how to apply it to real life situations. Having enjoyed my time at school I am excited by the prospect of going to university and learning more about our world around us. I hope for both a challenging and diverse career where I can help to improve the world for future generations to come.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I have always aspired to work in a field which requires a great deal of drive, determination, care and compassion. It was inevitable that I would strive towards a career in medicine when first introduced to the astounding world of science. I became enticed by the workings of the world and was especially fascinated by the sheer complexity of the human body, and the diversity of the systems and functions working constantly inside of us to maintain and sustain life. An ever enquiring mind and genuine enthusiasm inspired me to study the sciences in more depth at A-Level, where my real devotion to a career in the ever-changing and greatly rewarding field of medicine flourished.

I developed a keen interest in the body's response to illness and disease during my AS-Level biology course. Independent research into pathology became evermore poignant when the focus of media coverage outlined the deterioration of our nation's health in terms of escalating instances of diabetes and heart disease arising from, for example, childhood obesity. The realisation of the magnitude of ill-health which surrounded me encouraged me to strive to make my ambition of becoming a doctor a reality.

At 15 years of age, I was disappointed to learn that I was too young to gain work experience within a hospital environment. Turning a negative into a positive, I accepted the opportunity to carry out my experience at a Veterinary Hospital and feel that from this I have gained indispensable interpersonal skills, practical knowledge of clinical procedures and a logical approach to working practice. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team enhanced greatly my ability to communicate with both staff and clients alike, and observing the daunting task of giving bad news developed my ability to empathise with others.

March 20_ saw my attendance at a PARTNERS student shadowing event at the University of Newcastle, where I attended a medical lecture and spoke with current medical students about their experiences of university life. This, and an overnight stay at Oxford University with many like-minded students, reinforced my aspiration to study medicine and made me aware of the need to possess the utmost determination and stamina to succeed.

I attended a PreMed course in September at Imperial College, London. Practical workshops offered the opportunity of wound suturing and interpreting X-rays; lectures offered a sound picture of all that medical school and a career in the medical profession entails. A non-biased account was given of the inevitable social sacrifices required to succeed in the medical profession, and the continual academic commitment required, both pre and post graduate, to accommodate the ever developing medical advances. The need to integrate recreational and professional time management to maintain a balanced lifestyle was greatly emphasised throughout the course. My love for running shall therefore remain with me through the demanding yet supremely gratifying challenge of both medical school and the medical profession thereafter.

For the past 3 years I have been and active member of St Vincent de Paul's Society; a voluntary organisation whose aim is to offer help and support to people in the local community. Focusing upon elderly care, I visit a local nursing home on a weekly basis. My confidence has spiralled as my attachment to the residents has deepened, and I feel I have gained as much pleasure from offering a friendly face, as they have from receiving one. Interaction on a one-to-one basis shows the evident importance of a holistic approach to care, which is the ethos of the nursing home.

A career in medicine where life-long learning co-exists with the opportunity to rise to new challenges is a deeply exciting prospect. Invaluable skills and attributes gained in my preparations for university have affirmed my conviction that a career in the medical field would be a most challenging, yet rewarding vocation for me to pursue.

Dear _,

My interest in computers and technology started when I was given a computer as a present, at the age of ten. Because there was nobody to teach me how to use it, I had to teach myself, experimenting with different options.

The fact that I wanted to learn more about computers was strengthened when I started AS level computing. What I like about computing is that it covers a broad range of topics- from computer structure to The Data Protection Act. It covers the applications in society as well as core components that make up a typical computer. I particularly enjoyed learning about internal components such as the CPU, and different types of hardware.

Taking physics helped me to increase understanding of the electronic aspects of technology, and reinforced my knowledge of methods of communication, and the properties of different waves used. I enjoyed learning about the fundamental aspects of how data is transmitted - within the computer itself, and over a wider area such as networks. Both physics and computing are my strongest subjects, and both involve using logic to solve problems, which I like doing.

At the end of year 12, I was required to undertake a task during 'enrichment week'. I chose to spend this week working at a computer business, __ During this week, I had to assemble computers for a business client, so gained knowledge on different components. I also had to create and present a slideshow about Office , to teach staff at a community centre. For short periods I had to deal with customers, and perform common tasks, such as operating system upgrades. The owner of _ was a computer science graduate, and this meant I could question him on course content which is shared with computing. The time I spent at __ cemented my desire to study computing at a higher level.

In school, I have helped raise money for charity by taking part in a sponsored walk. During lunchtimes, I have helped supervise computer use in the library. Throughout high school, I have taken part in the annual 'interform' football tournament which takes place every year.

Outside of school, I play a lot of football during weekends, and have a brown belt in karate. I am also a very passionate boxing fan, and regularly watch and debate about it.

I have noticed how computers are used all around me, from medical applications to weather forecasting. E-business, a vital component of today's trade sector, is entirely dependent on networks. Computers are used extensively in such a diverse range of places and environments, and I would love to play a part in advancing the already thriving computer industry. It fascinates me, how quickly technology moves forward. A few decades ago, simple mailing using computers was out of the question. Nowadays, online shopping, virtual tours, etc. are common practice on the Internet. It is what lies ahead that I would like to be part of.

In the future, I hope my interest in computers will enable me to become a systems analyst. Embarking on such a degree would be very beneficial to me in terms of increasing my knowledge and understanding. I am very enthusiastic and confident when it comes to computer systems, and I feel that this will play a major part in helping me to fulfil my ambition.

Dear xx,

The study of mathematical sciences has intrigued me for many years. Thedecision to study A levels in both Maths and Physics stemmed from a highinterest level and strong aptitude in both subject areas. This was reflected inthe AS grades I received in June 20xx; achieving an A grade in mathematics whichhas inspired me further in my pursuit of the subject.

My interest has spread to computers and trying to link the two together hasplayed a big part of my life in the last few years. I have taught myself, usingbooks and other available sources, how to program in HTML and this has made itpossible for me to take an active role in web design.

My other academic interests include Business Studies, especially managementand finance areas which link with sections of the maths course. My choice toinclude a humanities subject at A level was partly encouraged by my need toanalyse and evaluate situations, Business Studies gives me the chance to do thisin great detail and I find it therapeutic to get involved in relevant

case studies. I am also taking an A level in General Studies which isincreasing my knowledge of political and cultural issues. The subject alsoencourages group discussions concerning current affairs and provides me with theopportunity to input my opinions.

For the last few years I have been a member of a Duke of Edinburgh schemerunning locally within the college. In June 20xx I completed the Bronze Award andam now working towards my Gold. This has given me a lot of experience inteamwork, problem solving and maintaining a high level of responsibility. Thesequalities have been taken on into a successful work experience placement in year10 and my part time job as a sales/management assistant at respectable retailoutlet Marks and Spencer.

I have enjoyed my time in the Sixth Form and have taken pleasure from boththe academic and extra-curricular activities. I feel that I possess thequalities required to continue maths on to a higher level and combine it withmodules that both interest me now and in areas which I hope to build on whilstat university. I am confident that this enthusiasm will combine with my strongdetermination and motivation, enabling me to succeed in the challenges thatuniversity presents.

Yours sincerely,

xx

Dear _,

After studying for 6 years, which was like a small boat passing through a river and discovering the branches of medicine, I finally reach the big see. I stopped for a while, and then I decide my way.

I graduated from _____ University, Collage of Medicine in ____ in June 2007, with GPA 4.48/5 “second degree honour”. Then I start the internship for one year, and I finished it with an excellent evaluation.

My decision of seeking a career in neurosurgery was not made in one second or to looking for shiny epithet. During the premedical years, I found the basic neurosciences interesting and challenging. This was reflecting on the medical ones, when I was giving the neurological topics more interest. But mean while, I was interested in surgical skills. For that reason I spend 3 months from my internship in neurosurgery &had an excellent evaluation, during these rotations; I read and asked about neurosurgery, especially about its subspecialties, the challenges in this field and social life. When I understand what does mean to be a neurosurgeon, I chose neurosurgery as my life career.

My professional goals include the completion of a neurosurgery residency training at one of the Canadian programs. I have chosen Canada to complete my post graduate studies because of their excellent facilities, advanced research centres, high level of training and excellent reputation of their graduates. After completing my postgraduate studies and being highly specialized in one of the branches of neurosurgery, I will be proud to participate in the neurosurgical training programs in my country and to provide a high standard of care to my community.

I hope my request for an assignment at your program will be considered favourable.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I have always been fascinated by people and the way they behave, but it is only as I have grown older and become more aware of psychology that I have begun to question why people are the way they are, why they interact differently with other people and why we all take a different approach to certain situations. I also find it interesting how society, culture and the attitudes and opinions of other people can have such an impact on a person's behaviour. For example, I find in intriguing how one can intentionally harm or abuse another and feel no remorse or guilt at all. Whereas another may be extremely guilt-ridden.

I recently had the chance to speak to a psychologist following family difficulties. I found the help and advice given very helpful, and this experience was my final encouragement to study psychology.

In fifth year, I sat four highers with predicted grades of one A, two B's and one C. However, partly due to the above incident, I did not meet all predicted grades, but received a B in Higher Music. This year, I am fully committed to my studies and strive to achieve the following grades; an A in Higher Geography; a B in Higher English; an A in Higher Drama and an A in Advanced Higher Music.

I am currently responsible for marketing on the yearbook committee and, at the moment, I am requesting sponsorship from companies in the region. This position within the committee allows me to act as a team leader and a team member, as well as improve both my written and spoken communication skills. Additionally, it means I must meet deadlines and make important decisions regarding finance. For five years now, I have been elected by my peers to be a Pupil Council representative in my school. This allows me to take others into consideration, listen to their concerns and advocate on their behalf in front of other representatives and school staff.

Outside school, I am a part-time waitress in a busy restaurant. This gives me the opportunity to work in stressful situations with many different people - some of whom can be very challenging. However, it gives me financial independence and I am efficiently balancing my job and school work. I feel this experience will benefit me when I attend university and live away from home. I will have to balance my social life and my time for study and coursework, as well as a possible part-time job.

Drama is a particular interest of mine and I feel it is linked to psychology. To successfully portray a character, I have to consider every detail of their personality, as well as past, present or even future circumstances which may alter the character throughout the play. Currently, I am trying to set up an after school drama club for younger pupils, which will lead up to a show before summer . I believe this will provide yet another opportunity for me to work with people with varying abilities and needs, as well as develop my people skills and spoken communication skills.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing guitar, keyboard and drums, as well as writing music and lyrics for my own songs. I feel this is a relaxing and creative way to express my thoughts and feelings. I also enjoy working as part of a team, whether it be playing music or dancing. I was a member of the Scottish Thistle Country Dancers, and here, enjoyed both learning and teaching dances.

I had a work placement at the Citizens Advice Bureau, where I experienced cases concerning people in difficult situations, ranging from drug abuse to financial debt. Whilst listening to the problems of some clients, I couldn't help but wonder what in their psyches made them make the decisions that led to their personal life choices. Some people are happy with what they have in life whilst others from a similar demographic need more, or believe that their position in life has been under achieved and they strive, in various ways, to make their lives more acceptable to them. In some cases they try to achieve their goal through hard work, in others, criminal activity. But, in some minds, it is a means to an end, hence not criminal in their eyes. I believe, through the study of psychology, I may be able to better understand the choices such people make and why.

In conclusion, I feel I am ready for university life and look forward to it immensely. Studying for my degree, I intend to contribute to it as much as I receive from it. I am committed and will give total dedication to my chosen course, and I am prepared to work to the best of my ability in order to succeed in taking the first major step towards achieving my chosen career in Psychology.

Yours sincerely,

shenqing/

Dear _,

Having spent the last four years working in the social care field, I have come to realise that my passion lies in helping people who are less advantaged. I am currently taking an access to higher education course to further my ambition to become a social worker.

Until recently I was working in a residential home with adults with learning disabilities ranging from mild to severe. I worked with individuals who also have bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and challenging behaviour. This gave me great insight into the role of a social worker as I was attending multi-disciplinary care reviews helping service users to determine their present needs and wishes and identify future goals and desired outcomes, on an ongoing basis, whilst promoting empowerment, individuality, rights, responsibilities, identity and self esteem. I was putting care plans into action by helping individuals with life skills e.g. developing basic budgeting and money managing skills, providing information or helping service users to access information relevant to their needs and wishes, assisting them to develop a higher level of independence and improve their communication and social skills.

I was also providing continuous emotional support on a daily basis and during stressful life changes. I learnt how to communicate with clients about sensitive issues in an appropriate manner, understanding and being prepared for their reactions to the information. This job significantly improved my communication skills, my patience, and my initiative. As a result I became more aware of my own values and beliefs whilst showing respect for all persons and their values, beliefs, cultures, goals, needs and preferences.

I completed the NVQ3 in Health and Social care which enabled me to develop my practice. I learnt about the laws, legislations and different government policies involved in social care, about abuse and the different forms it can take and how to help individuals take control of their lives.

Although I have no experience working with children and families, I have raised my daughter single handed and feel that I can relate to families who are having troubles. I hope with my positive attitude and determination to improve my own quality of life I can reflect this into my practice when helping others.

At present I am studying Sociology, Psychology, Law and Politics on the access course. I am learning about the impacts of the industrial revolution and how society is seen from a Marxist and functionalist point of view, about different types of mental disorders, the structure of the government and how the criminal justice system works. I am finding it very interesting and am really enjoying being back in education.

I also read the Community Care magazine each week to keep up to date with social issues. I find the topics on current social issues very interesting and enjoy reading about the experiences of qualified social workers I also find the articles on topics such as advocacy helpful. I hope that studying the degree in social work will give me a greater understanding of social problems, their causes, their solutions and the impacts these have while allowing me to obtain the skills I require to be successful in my chosen career path.

Dear _,

An experienced electronic engineer trained in China's major cradle of technological talents, I am submitting this document in support of my application for acceptance into your graduate program. With more than eight years of higher learning and quality research behind me, I now stand ready to pursue advanced studies and scale grander heights in my career.

Presently, I work at a leading Beijing-based center of telecommunications research and development, jointly run by Canada's Northern Telecom Ltd., one of the world's foremost IT enterprises, and the Beijing University of Yanjiu, a major higher-learning institution in IT technologies in China. Engaged in cutting-edge research and development at this center, I have accumulated a lot of advanced knowledge and expertise in IT technologies in a relatively short time.

I obtained this coveted position at such a respected international establishment on the strength of my research experience at the North China Institute of Computing Technologies, the country's oldest research organization in computer science. Exercising my diligence and creativity, I specialized in automation research and development in this institute, which not only gave me the opportunity to make full use of what I had learned at the university but also spurred me to constantly improve myself. I taught myself Computer Control Technology, Contemporary Control Theory, Electrical control Technology and Process Control & Automation Device, among other subjects.

Because of my strong skills in both hardware and software, I was appointed in 1995 the leader of a team to design the computer control system “Distributed Control System (DCS)”. Under my effective leadership, the team completed design of the system structure, development of the modules, and programming of the software, and system debugging all in less than one year. A real-time computer control system, it can be combined with 2048 channels. For this project, I independently designed the kernels-CPU module, two other modules and the I/O interface software. The system is now a leading product in China's automation industry.

My research successes were built upon my solid undergraduate training at Tsinghua University, widely considered China's best engineering school. Between 1989 and 1994, I studied at Tsinghua as a major of electronic engineering, concentrating on basic courses as well as courses of my major. These courses solidly grounded me in theories of telecommunications and endowed me with all-round expertise in both software and hardware engineering. At the time of my graduation, my overall GPA ranked me among the top 10% of about 200 students in my grade.

Taking advantage of Tsinghua's emphasis on hands-on experience, I did a lot of lab work in my undergraduate studies. In my third year, I joined the university's Laboratory of Information Systems. In the lab I successfully designed the “2Mb/s PCM Digital Interface (32 frames)” used in the analogue PBX (Private Branch Exchange). In 1993, I independently designed a “Speech Signal Processing Card” used in the SUN SPARC station. This successful development of this card ended the situation in which the SUN SPARC station could not be used for speech processing and other multimedia applications. In the course of these projects, I became versed in hardware structure of the RISC computer, UNIX operating system and programming. All this laid a firm foundation for my career advancement.

My academic standing was so strong that I was offered acceptance into Tsinghua's graduate school without the normally mandatory admission exams. That was a privilege available to only the very best of each crop of graduating students. But I declined the offer, figuring that I should gain challenging research experience behind me, I think the time has come for me to not only undertake graduate studies but also undertake graduate studies in a quality program in the United States.

Ideally, I would like to enter into a Master's program that would lead me into Ph. D. studies later on. In such a program, I would like to focus my studies on one or a combination of the following areas: Control Systems, Communications Engineering, Digital Signal and Image Processing, or Microcomputer Applications. I will bring to the program a professional background significantly enrich my knowledge, enhance my expertise, and sharpen my research skills. If you accept me, you should find, some years down the road, that I will be a leading scientist in China's efforts to develop its IT industries.
